.it is the country-specific top-level domain (ccTLD) for Italy . It was registered on December 23, 1987 and is managed by IIT - CNR through seven servers.
In total, an .it domain can be between three and 63 characters long, the assignment is fully automated and usually only takes a few hours.
The award conditions were last changed at the end of June 2012. For a long time, only natural or legal persons could register an .it domain who have their place of residence or company headquarters in a member state of the European Union . With effect from July 11, 2012, this restriction will be at least partially lifted so that people from Iceland , Norway , San Marino , Switzerland and the Vatican can also register an .it domain. The requirement to provide either a valid passport or sales tax number when ordering a domain remained. Most registrars assist domain owners in submitting the relevant data to the registry.
Since July 2012, persons and corporations from the Vatican can also register .it domains. Support for non-alphanumeric characters has also been introduced. The so-called IDN procedure was implemented for a total of 21 additional characters, including German umlauts.
