.ro is the country-specific top-level domain (ccTLD) for Romania . It was introduced on February 26, 1993 and has since been administered by the National Institute for R&D in Informatics (German National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics ) with headquarters in Bucharest .

properties

A .ro domain can be between one and 63 characters long. Every natural or legal person worldwide can register addresses, a place of residence or a branch in the country are not necessary - not even for the Admin-C . However, unlike other unrestricted ccTLDs , the registry requires the identification of the ID number and the date of birth or a valid entry in the commercial register if it is a company. IDN is supported. The Romanian diacritical marks ă, â, î, ș and ț are possible.

Domains can be registered on both the second and third level. There are several second-level domains , some of which are reserved for specific target groups. Examples are:

  • .com.ro for companies
  • .store.ro for e-commerce
  • .arts.ro for art and culture
  • .tm.ro for registered trademarks
  • .www.ro in general for the World Wide Web

The official award criteria show twelve domains on the second level.

particularities

In 2005 aicovo GmbH from Rosenheim announced that they had signed a contract with the National Institute for R&D in Informatics. The aim was to increase the promotion of the top-level domain for interested parties from the city and district of Rosenheim , for which RO should stand as an abbreviation. The cooperation was expressly supported by the city administration and the Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences .

Change in fees

In 2016, the Romanian roNIC decided to switch from a one-time fee payment to a tariff with annual payment. It was decided that the amount that customers paid once for a ".ro" domain before December 1, 2016 (approx. USD 60) corresponds to a period of 5 years. Thus:

  • Domains registered before July 1, 2012 are subject to annual fees as of July 1, 2017
  • Domains registered between July 1, 2012 and July 1, 2017 are considered registered up to 5 years after purchase, from then on the annual fees apply
  • Domains that were registered before 2012 had to be renewed for a fee until October 1, 2017, otherwise the domain registration expired.
