properties

As with .de , second-level domains are also assigned with .fo . Domain names may consist of letters from A – Z (simple letters), 0–9 and the hyphen (“-”). The maximum length is 63 characters. Letters with diacritical marks or special letters are not allowed, not even the Faroese letters "á", "é", "í", "ó", "ú", "ý", "æ", "ð" and "ø" . These must be replaced accordingly.

history

The top-level domain .fo was registered on March 15, 1993 in the so-called root zone of the Domain Name System . In September 1997 an application was made to the IANA to set up the .fo-TLD, after which it was initially administered from Denmark by UNI2 . In December 2003, UNI2 applied for the domain to be transferred to the FO Council with the aim of establishing an independent and self-regulated administration. After discussions between ICANN and the Danish government, the final approval finally came in September 2004. The FO Council then also accepted the transfer. In November 2004, completion of the transfer was approved by the ICANN Board of Directors .
