.yt is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the French overseas department of Mayotte . It has existed since November 17, 1997 and is managed by the French registry AFNIC , which is also responsible for .fr and .re , for example . Following a public tender, the French Ministry for Industrial Reconstruction confirmed its cooperation with AFNIC in July 2012.

history

The top-level domain initially had strict allocation criteria, so that a connection was not only practically impossible for foreigners . The AFNIC conditions were liberalized for the first time in 2004, but a residence or establishment in Mayotte was still necessary. After all, since December 6, 2011, anyone without a physical presence in the country has been able to register .yt domains.

properties

A .yt domain can be between three and 63 characters long. Only alphanumeric characters are supported, special characters cannot be used. In the course of registration, personal data such as date and place of birth is required.

meaning

Since the registration of the top-level domain has been possible for everyone on December 6, 2011, Internet sites related to YouTube have also been registered, since YT can stand for YouTube.
