The Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération ( French , AFNIC for short ) is a non-profit organization based in Montigny-le-Bretonneux . It was founded in December 1997 to take over the administration of country-specific top-level domains .

history

In 1986, the Institut national de recherche en informatique et en en automatique (INRIA) was granted the right to manage the top-level domain .fr for France . It was not until 1996 that a guideline was published under which domains could actually be registered. Finally, INRIA founded AFNIC as a non-profit organization in 1998, which was later given the management of the .fr extension.

On June 25, 2001, at the request of the French government , .re, the second top-level domain under the management of AFNIC, was introduced. The award criteria are identical to those of .fr. Since 2004 everyone has in principle had the right to register any domains - previously interested parties still had to prove their claims, for example in the form of a registered trademark . A physical presence in France or on Réunion was still necessary. Since 2006, not only legal entities but also natural persons can order a .fr domain.

In 2007 AFNIC published the first Domain Name Industry Report , which provides information about .fr and .re domains and their success. It has been published every year since then. On January 11th, 2008 AFNIC reached the mark of one million registered domains for .fr. In 2011 there were two million registrations.

Starting on July 3, 2012, AFNIC will support the use of special characters as so-called internationalized domain names for all ccTLDs that are in their administration . As part of the introduction of new top-level domains , the city of Paris is applying for .paris together with AFNIC and CORE .

criticism

In 2004 the organization came under fire when over 4,000 domains of the registrar EuroDNS were blocked. The point of contention at the time was that EuroDNS, with the help of a trustee, also made it possible for foreigners to register .fr domains. The AFNIC viewed this procedure as a violation of the official award criteria. Ultimately, the dispute over the blocked domains ended up in court.
