Institut national de recherche en informatique et en automatique ( INRIA ; German  National Research Institute for Computer Science and Automation ) is a French government research institution with a technological and scientific character. It is under the joint responsibility of the national Ministry of Education, Research and Technology and the Ministry of Economy and Finance . Its headquarters are in Le Chesnay in the Yvelines department .

The institute was founded in 1967 as IRIA (Institut de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique) and was called INRIA from 1980. It works closely on an international level with the World Wide Web Consortium ( W3C ), whose European seat it was from April 1995 to 2003.
