Saclay is a French commune 18.6 kilometers southwest of Paris in the Essonne department in the Île-de-France region in France . The place has 4029 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and is located in an agricultural area on a plateau of the same name. The water reservoir in the area was used to supply the pools in the park of the Palace of Versailles .

The inhabitants are called Saclaysiens .

Saclay has no direct rail or metro connection. The next station that can be reached by RER is Le Guichet in Orsay , 3.2 kilometers south of the center of Saclay (with RER B line ), or Vauboyen station in Jouy-en-Josas to the north ( RER C line ).

Research cluster

In Saclay there is a research center of the French Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA 2 ) founded in 1945 for nuclear and elementary particle physics, nuclear technology, but also biology and materials research, with around 6000 permanent employees, including 5000 scientists (2008) .

A science and technology center with universities, private and state laboratories and residential areas as well as a TGV station is under construction (as of 2016) .
