Saint Martin Church

Bièvres is a French commune with 4639 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Essonne department near Paris in the canton of Gif-sur-Yvette . The inhabitants are called Biévrois .

geography

Bièvres is the northernmost municipality in the Essonne department. It is located on the Bièvre , a tributary of the Seine from which it takes its name. This is derived from a Celtic word that means beaver .

It is connected to the RER line C. Despite its proximity to Paris and Versailles , it has so far been able to withstand the urge to urbanize and retain its rural character.

Bièvres borders on Jouy-en-Josas , Saclay , Vauhallan , Igny , Verrières-le-Buisson , Châtenay-Malabry and Vélizy-Villacoublay .

The place is first mentioned in documents in the 12th century.

Culture

The house of the writer Victor Hugo and three museums are located in Bièvres : the Musée français de la photographie (French Museum of Photography), a tool and fire department museum.
