Brétigny-sur-Orge [ bʁet̪iɲi sʏʁ ɔʁʒ ] is a French municipality with 26,528 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Essonne in the region of Ile-de-France ; it belongs to the Arrondissement Palaiseau and is the capital of the canton Brétigny-sur-Orge .

Brétigny-sur-Orge is located in the Île-de-France region on the southern edge of the greater Paris area , in the middle of the Hulepoix natural region, a plateau cut through by the Orge river valley .

history

In 697, when the area belonged to the Frankish Empire , the place was first mentioned under the name Britiniacus in the founding act of the Limours monastery . Since 1030 the St. Petrus church of the place is occupied. In the 12th century a castle was built on the site where the city center is today. The city ​​suffered severe damage during the Hundred Years War . In 1614 François de Martel converted the castle into a castle in the Louis Treize style with a French garden.

In 1843, the place received its rail connection: A section of the Paris – Bordeaux line including a branch line to Tours was opened. The town only got a train station in 1865, which has been served by the RER line C since 1979 . In 1864 the place became the seat of a mairie .

In 1938 a military airfield was built in Brétigny , which existed until 2001. In 1940 the place came under German occupation in the course of the western campaign and was liberated by the Third United States Army on August 23, 1944 . On August 15, 1953, Jacqueline Auriol started her Dassault Mystère II from the Brétigny base to be the first woman to break the sound barrier .

The 1960s brought Brétigny to the construction of several large residential complexes on the outskirts.

La Fontaine Castle

The 12th century church of St-Pierre , classified as a Monument historique since September 7th, 1977 , is the only listed building in the city. Some pottery shards and architectural elements indicate a pre-Romanesque origin. It was enlarged in the 12th and 13th centuries before it was damaged during the Hundred Years War. It was first restored during the 15th and 16th centuries. Its three-aisled structure with a flat choir apse and a bell tower that rises above a side aisle is typical of this region. During the Ancien Régime it served as a burial church , two hundred and fifty graves from this period still exist. During the Revolution it was declared a national property and has since served as a venue for popular festivals and for the election of the first mayor of Brétigny-sur-Orge.

The La Fontaine Castle in 1914 in the Renaissance style built. Boucher d'Argis , author of numerous articles in the Encyclopédie , lived for some time in the previous building before he was beheaded during the terrorist period in Paris. Then the estate was acquired by Baron Fain , Napoleon I's secret secretary and mayor of the city (1819-1825). The current building is used by a technical university ( IUT ).

Only the manor house remains from the manor house of Brétigny, built in the La Garde field at the beginning of the 16th century . The remaining buildings were demolished in the early 19th century, and its residents moved to Marolles-en-Hurepoix as early as 1760 .

The 17th century Maison du Carouge was faithfully rebuilt in the 1980s. The wealthy owners had a small romantic garden laid out, which is watered by the Blutin stream . A water mill, which has been in use since the Middle Ages, is very close by .
