The Dassault Mystère ( French secret ) was a single-engine fighter aircraft from the French manufacturer Dassault Aviation from the Cold War era . The MD452 Mystère IV A version was the first Dassault aircraft with swept wings .
Development history
Immediately after the MD 450 Ouragan , the planning of an aircraft began with even better flight performance that was only possible with swept wings. The prototype Mystère I had its maiden flight on February 23, 1951. During the tests eight further prototypes were built: two each Mystère I and Mystère II and four Mystère IIB . The first prototype had the same Rolls-Royce-Nene engine as the Ouragan; the other eight received Rolls-Royce Tay manufactured under license from the French company Hispano-Suiza ( Bois-Colombes near Paris) , which were called Hispano-Suiza Verdon .
In preparation for production, eleven pre-series Mystère IICs were built. They were fitted with SNECMA Atar 101 jet engines with 3000 kp thrust. The prototype of the Mystère IV was based on these machines ; the final series aircraft Mystère IVA got new, thinner wings with a more pronounced arrow position, a longer fuselage with an oval cross-section and a modified tail unit. Both Rolls-Royce Tay and Hispano-Suiza Verdon 350 were used as engines .
The first of a total of 480 series machines of the Mystère IVA were put into service in 1955. They were, among other things as a coach as well as the to the 1980s aerobatics relay team Patrouille de France used.
Like the Ouragan, the Mystère IVA were used by India and Israel .
The variants MD453 Mystère III, Mystère IVB and the Mystère IVN all only existed as prototypes, as they were overtaken by the Super Mystère B2 .
