The Dassault Étendard II was the prototype for a fighter aircraft from the French manufacturer Dassault Aviation , which was to follow the Dassault Mystère series.

history

At the end of 1953, the French Air Force wrote a tender for a light fighter-bomber. The French navy was looking at the same time a similar aircraft to use them from their aircraft carriers. Dassault therefore began the project, originally called Mystère XXII . Two prototypes were ordered in November 1954. The first took off on its maiden flight on July 23, 1956, the second was not completed. The aircraft was presented to the French Air Force for evaluation, but rejected in favor of the Dassault Mirage III . The navy decided on the parallel development of Étendard IV .

construction

The Étendard II had the revised fuselage of the Mirage III, the swept wings of the Dassault Super Mystère B2 and was powered by two Turboméca- Gabizo jet engines with 18.4 kN each and should have two 30 mm cannons and rockets in a weapon bay be armed. In addition, it should also be possible to attach bombs or missiles under the wings. However, the services proved to be too weak and did not meet the requirements of the French Air Force, so that further development in favor of the Mirage series was canceled in 1956.
