Gif-sur-Yvette is a French city with 21,379 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) about 30 km south-west Paris in the department of Essonne in the region of Ile-de-France .
geography
Gif-sur-Yvette is located 20 kilometers southeast of the metropolitan area of Paris, on the banks of the Yvette River , rather rural, and belongs to the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse Regional Nature Park .
history
A Celtic settlement from the 6th century was excavated in 2006 by archaeologists from the state research institute INRAP (Institut national de recherches archéologiques). The remains of fifteen houses as well as workshops and garbage pits were found in which jewelry and ceramics were found. The number of residents is estimated at around one hundred people.
The Duke of Windsor and later King of Britain had an estate in Moulin de la Tuilerie . The garden was designed by Russell Page .
