Saulx-les-Chartreux is a French municipality with 5886 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Essonne in the region of Ile-de-France . Saulx-les-Chartreux is part of the Palaiseau arrondissement and the Longjumeau canton . The inhabitants are called Salucéens .
geography
The Yvette flows through the place, which is about 20 kilometers south of Paris in the Hurepoix landscape . Saulx-les-Chartreux is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Champlan in the north, Longjumeau in the northeast, Ballainvilliers in the east, La Ville-du-Bois in the southeast, Nozay in the south, Villejust in the southwest and Villebon-sur-Yvette in the west and northwest.
The route nationale 20 runs along the eastern edge of the municipality .
history
622 Saulx was first a possession of the abbey of Saint-Denis in the charters of King Dagobert I performed. The Carthusian Order (French Chartreux ) became landlord over the area in 1264.
catastrophe
On July 11, 1973 the VARIG flight 820 had an accident on the journey from Rio de Janeiro. After a fire broke out in the on-board toilet, the pilots were able to make an emergency landing in a field near Saulx-les-Chartreux. 123 people died because of the smoke.
