history

The canton of Longjumeau was established in 1800 with 27 municipalities: Ablon (since 1926 Ablon-sur-Seine), Athis , Ballainvilliers , Bondoufle , Champlan , Chilly-Mazarin , Courcouronnes , Épinay-sur-Orge , Fleury-Mérogis , Grigny , Juvisy -sur-Orge , Longjumeau , Longpont (since 1951 Longpont-sur-Orge), Massy , Mons , Morangis , Morsang-sur-Orge , Paray , Le Plessis-Pâté , Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois , Saulx-les-Chartreux , Savigny-sur-Orge , Villemoisson-sur-Orge , Villeneuve-le-Roi , Villiers-sur-Orge , Viry-Châtillon and Wissous . He belonged to the Arrondissement of Corbeil in the Seine-et-Oise department ; Today, 25 of these communities belong to the Essonne department and two to the Val-de-Marne department .

Bondoufle and Courcouronnes were soon ceded to the canton of Corbeil , and after the merger of Athis and Mons in 1817, only 24 parishes remained. In 1895 Plessis-Pâté was given to the canton of Arpajon .

In 1962 the canton became part of the new Arrondissement Palaiseau (decree of November 7, 1962). A little later (decree of January 28, 1964) the cantonal division of the Seine-et-Oise department was fundamentally changed and the canton Longjumeau was divided into six new cantons: Athis-Mons, Juvisy-sur-Orge, Longjumeau, Massy, Savigny-sur- Orge et Villeneuve-le-Roi. The new canton Longjumeau contained only six municipalities: Ballainvilliers, Chilly-Mazarin, Longjumeau, Longpont-sur-Orge, Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois and Villiers-sur-Orge.

The reorganization of the Paris region then resulted in a further redesign of the cantons (decree of July 20, 1967): Longjumeau lost another three municipalities, Longpont-sur-Orge, (now canton Montlhéry ), Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois and Villiers -sur-Orge (now the canton of Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois ), but received two from the canton of Massy (Champlan et Saulx-les-Chartreux), so that it is now from the five municipalities of Ballainvilliers, Champlan, Chilly-Mazarin, Longjumeau and Saulx-les-Chartreux existed.

Another reform in connection with the 1976 elections (decree of November 25, 1975) gave the canton its current shape: it lost four municipalities (Chilly-Mazarin to the canton of Chilly-Mazarin , Ballainvilliers, Champlan and Saulx-les-Chartreux to the canton of Villebon-sur-Yvette ), and received three from the canton of Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois (Épinay-sur-Orge, Villemoisson-sur-Orge and Villiers-sur-Orge).
