Starting position

At 16:53 of Intercités 3657 left the Paris Austerlitz station on the way to the station Limoges Bénédictins , where he scheduled terms are scheduled to arrive at 19:54 would. The train consisted of an electric locomotive of series BB 26000 and seven Corail - car in which 385 passengers were traveling. The train was on the four- track Paris – Bordeaux line in this section . At around 5:14 p.m. he passed the Brétigny-sur-Orge station on platform 1 at 137 km / h , 150 km / h was permitted.

In a switch , 200 m north of the station, a flat tab had loosened that was supposed to connect two pieces of rail .

the accident

Sketch of the course of the accident

When the train drove over the switch, the flap came loose, the rail sections shifted against each other under the load of the train and the three rear (# 5 to 7) cars derailed. The screw coupling between the fourth and fifth car broke. The fifth and sixth car slid partially over the platform . After the accident , the fifth car was on track 3 and the sixth was across the platform. The fourth car was also derailed.

The engine driver of the train involved in the accident immediately triggered an alarm, which automatically blocked the entire route , including the opposite track. In this way, he prevented a return train that was approaching the station from driving into the derailed wagons.

consequences

Seven people (three travelers on the train accident and another four travelers waiting on the platform) died and twelve others were seriously injured.

On July 24, 2013, the Évry Public Prosecutor opened a preliminary investigation into manslaughter and negligent bodily harm .

The fact that the tab came loose was due to poor maintenance. An expert report concluded that the switch was in a "state of unprecedented decay". The SNCF had been aware of this for a long time without taking any action. The state infrastructure authority Réseau Ferré de France (RFF) denied this, but ordered an investigation of all 5000 identical points in the French rail network.

Arriving rescue workers were pelted with stones by a group of young people. Police tried to drive the youth away. The police, in turn, were attacked with stones and forced to call for reinforcements. In addition, there should have been looting of the dead and injured by young people. The actual course of this incident, especially the extent of the looting, is contested. The tabloids would have exaggerated him before most of the media carefully copied everything.
