Jouy-en-Josas is a French municipality with 8191 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Yvelines in the region Ile-de-France . It is four kilometers south of Versailles and 15 kilometers southwest of Paris in the Bièvre valley . The inhabitants are called Jovaciens .

Jouy-en-Josas is located in the “Vallée de la Bièvre ” on the north-eastern edge of the Yvelines department. Neighboring municipalities of Jouy-en-Josas are Vélizy-Villacoublay and Versailles in the north, Bièvres in the east, Saclay and Toussus-le-Noble in the south and Les Loges-en-Josas and Buc in the west.

history

On May 1, 1756, the first Treaty of Versailles was signed in Jouy-en-Josas at the palace of the French Foreign Minister Antoine Louis Rouillé (1689–1761). The building was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century and replaced by a new castle.

Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf , who was elected mayor in 1790, ran his famous cotton spinning and cloth manufacture in Jouy-en-Josas until 1844. Toile-de-Jouy (Jouystoff) is still a synonym for high-quality printed cotton in France .

etymology

The name "Jouy" comes from the Latin gaudium , joy ( French joie ). "Josas" was the name of a former church district of the Archdiocese of Paris .

Education and Research

Jouy-en-Josas is the seat of the École des hautes études commerciales (HEC), a commercial college.

Also in the community is one of the largest sites of the national research institute for agronomy INRA , which is located on several hectares of land on the outskirts.

The parish church of Saint-Martin and the grave of Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf are worth seeing . Léon Blum is buried in the community cemetery. The painter Georges Paul Leroux was also buried in Jouy-en-Josas. The “Musée de la Toile de Jouy” has been showing, since 1977, various printed Jouy fabrics and the tools needed to make them.

Personalities

  • The French writer Victor Hugo rented a small house in the district of Le Metz in 1834 in order to live out his relationship with his muse, the French actress Juliette Drouet .
  • Former French Prime Minister Léon Blum lived and died in the city. He was buried in Jouy-en-Josas.
  • Jeanne Blum , educator, school founder and last wife of Léon Blum , also lived and died in Jouy-en-Josas and was buried there.

  • François Certain de Canrobert , Marshal of France, built the Château de l'Églantine , which now houses the Musée de la toile de Jouy .

  • The rock band Velvet Underground spontaneously reunited, for a short time, for an appearance on June 15, 1990 at an Andy Warhol exhibition in Jouy-en-Josas.
