Bothwell is a village in the north-west of the Scottish Council Area South Lanarkshire or in the traditional county of Lanarkshire . It is located around twelve kilometers southeast of the center of Glasgow on the right bank of the Clyde . On the opposite bank of the Clyde are Hamilton and Blantyre , to the north and east Uddingston , Motherwell and Bellshill .

history

A Marienkirche was mentioned on the site as early as the 6th century. The location was later associated with Brigida von Kildare (Bríde). The church probably formed the nucleus of today's Bothwell Parish Church , which was built in 1398 as a collegiate monastery .

In 1242 the lands came into the possession of Walter de Moravia (also Walter Moray ). Before the start of the Scottish Wars of Independence in 1296 there was a fortification at the politically and strategically important site, which formed the nucleus of Bothwell Castle . In 1679 the Battle of Bothwell Bridge took place southeast of Bothwell , which effectively ended the brief rebellion of the Covenanters that year with 400 dead and 1200 prisoners.

Located in the outskirts of Glasgow, Bothwell developed due to the proximity to Hamilton and Blantyre. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the coal and steel industries were one of the most important industries in Bothwell.

traffic

Bothwell is well connected to the road network within a few kilometers the A721 , A723 , A724 and A725 can be reached. The M74 touches Bothwell in the north. Bothwell Bridge has spanned the Clyde since the early 17th century . From 1787 the carriage route between Glasgow and Carlisle led over the Bothwell Bridge.
