Bellshill is a place in North Lanarkshire , Scotland , which is in the suburbs of Glasgow , two miles north of Motherwell . Bellshill had 20,634 inhabitants in 2011.

The earliest evidence of settlement in the Bellshill area is a place called Belmill , which was recorded on a map by Timothy Pont in 1654. The place consisted of a row of houses owned by a Mr. Bell who owned a stone mine south of it. When the mine closed, the site also disappeared and a settlement appeared nearby called Crossgates . Around 1810 the place took the name Bellshill and continued to grow. Nearby towns such as Black Moss and Sykehead were incorporated.

In the middle of the 19th century, large deposits of coal and iron were discovered nearby, and several mines were established. The rapid growth also brought emigrants from outside to Bellshill, in some cases even from Lithuania . Numerous train stations sprang up in the vicinity, such as in Mossend, Fallside and Bell Cross.

A hospital was built in the 1870s. During the First World War , the hospital specialized in infectious diseases.

According to a report by the Halifax Building Society , Bellshill was the place in the UK in the first quarter of 2005 where house prices rose the most, by 46%.
