career

McCoist began his professional career in 1978 with the then second division FC St. Johnstone for whom he scored 22 goals in 38 league games in his third season in 1980/81 and became top scorer, whereupon various clubs noticed him and finally the English AFC Sunderland signed him. But after a rather unsuccessful interlude (eight goals in 56 games) he returned to Scotland in 1983 and moved to the Glasgow Rangers.

Here he experienced his best time with ten championship titles and a cup victory as one of the best strikers in Scotland. In 1992 McCoist was named Scotland's Footballer of the Year . Even today he is the Rangers' record scorer with 251 goals in 418 games (all competitions) and Scotland's fifth best with 19 hits in 61 appearances (including World Cups in 1986 and 1990). Then he let his career at FC Kilmarnock end.

In 2004 McCoist became part of the coaching staff of the new Scottish national coach Walter Smith . With him he moved to the Rangers in 2007 as an assistant coach. He has been the head coach since 2011.
