The Scottish Football League First Division was played for the fourth time in 1978/79 as only the second highest Scottish league . It was also the fourth event as the second-highest division of men's football in Scotland under the name First Division . In the 1978/79 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 game days. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by FC Dundee , which at the same time secured participation in the Premier Division season 1979/80 . In addition to Dundee , the runner-up FC Kilmarnock also rose. FC Montrose and Queen of the South had to relegate to the Second Division . The top scorer with 28 goals was Blair Millar of FC Clydebank .
