The Scottish Football League First Division was held for the 37th time in 2011/12 as the second highest Scottish league under this name. In the second-highest division of men's football in Scotland , 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 matchdays in the 2011/12 season. Each team played four times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won Ross County , which together with the table runner-up FC Dundee at the same time secured participation in the Premier League season 2012/13 . After losing relegation, Ayr United and Queen of the South had to relegate to the Second Division . Colin McMenamin of Ross County was the top scorer with 19 goals .

Relegation
Participants in the relegation games were Ayr United from this year's First Division, as well as the three teams from the Second Division , FC Arbroath , FC Dumbarton and Airdrie United . The winners of the first round played in the last round for a place for the following Scottish First Division season 2012/13 . Due to the forced relegation of the Glasgow Rangers to the Third Division , Airdrie United rose to the First Division despite defeat in the second round.
