The Scottish Football League First Division was played for the first time in 1975/76 , after the Premier Division was introduced as the second highest Scottish league . It was also the first event as the second-highest division of men's football in Scotland under the name First Division . In the 1975/76 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 26 matchdays. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won Partick Thistle , which at the same time secured participation in the Premier Division season 1976/77 . In addition to Partick , second-placed FC Kilmarnock also rose. Dunfermline Athletic and FC Clyde had to relegate to the Second Division .
