The Scottish Football League First Division was held for the 34th time in 2008/09 as only the second highest Scottish league under this name. In the second-highest division of men's football in Scotland , 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 match days in the 2008/09 season, which was played from August 2, 2008 to May 11, 2009. Each team played four times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by FC St. Johnstone , which at the same time secured participation in the 2009/10 Premier League season . FC Clyde had to relegate to the Second Division . Airdrie United stayed despite losing relegation in the First Division, as Livingston FC had to relegate to the Third Division . The top scorer with 24 goals was Stephen Dobbie of Queen of the South .
