The Scottish Football League First Division was played for the ninth time in 1983/84 as only the second highest Scottish league . It was also the ninth discharge as second highest football -Spielklasse the gentlemen in Scotland under the name First Division . In the 1983/84 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 matchdays. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by the Greenock Morton team , which also secured participation in the 1984/85 Premier Division season . In addition to Greenock , the runner-up FC Dumbarton also rose. The Raith Rovers and Alloa Athletic had to relegate to the Second Division . Top scorer with 17 goals were James Fry of FC Clyde and John McNeil of the newly promoted Greenock .
