The Scottish Football League First Division was played for the fifth time in 1979/80 as only the second highest Scottish league . It was also the fifth edition of the men's second division football in Scotland under the name First Division . In the 1979/80 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 matchdays. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by the Heart of Midlothian team , which also secured participation in the 1980/81 Premier Division season . In addition to the Hearts , the runner-up Airdrieonians FC also rose. FC Arbroath and FC Clyde had to relegate to the Second Division . Top scorer with 22 goals were John Brogan from FC St. Johnstone and Sandy Clark from runner-up from Airdrie.
