The Scottish Football League Second Division was played for the sixth time in 1980/81 . After the introduction of the Premier Division it was only the third highest Scottish league . In addition, it was the sixth event as the third highest division of men's football in Scotland under the name Second Division . In the 1980/81 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 game days. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by FC Queen's Park , which at the same time secured participation in the First Division season 1981/82 . In addition to the Spiders , the runner-up Queen of the South also rose. The top scorer with 20 goals was Steve Hancock from FC Stenhousemuir .
