The Scottish Football League Division Three was played for the sixth time in 1948/49 . It was the last of six seasons in Division Three as the third highest division in Scotland . In the 1948/49 season, 12 clubs competed against each other in a total of 22 match days. Each team played twice against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal quotient counted .

The championship won the Forfar Athletic , which also secured participation in the Division Two season 1949/50 . All other teams were integrated into the regional leagues, the East and South of Scotland Football League outside the Scottish Football League at the end of the season .
