The Scottish Football League Second Division was held for the seventh time in 1981/82 . After the introduction of the Premier Division it was only the third highest Scottish league . In addition, it was the seventh event as the third highest division of men's football in Scotland under the name Second Division . In the 1981/82 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 game days. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .

The championship was won by FC Clyde , who also secured participation in the First Division 1982/83 season . In addition to Clyde , the runner-up Alloa Athletic also rose. The top scorer with 23 goals was Danny Masterton of FC Clyde.
