The Scottish Football League Second Division was played in 1991/92 for the 17th time after the introduction of the Premier Division as the third highest Scottish league . In addition, it was the seventeenth event as the third highest division of men's football in Scotland under the name Second Division . In the 1991/92 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 game days. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .

The championship was won by FC Dumbarton , which at the same time secured participation in the First Division season 1992/93 . In addition to Dumbarton , the runner-up FC Cowdenbeath rose. The top scorer with 26 goals was Andy Thomson of Queen of the South .
