The Scottish Football League Second Division was held in 1997/98 for the 23rd time after the introduction of the Premier Division as the third highest Scottish league . In addition, it was the twenty-third edition of the men's third-highest football division in Scotland under the name Second Division . In the 1997/98 season, 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 match days. Each team played four times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by FC Stranraer , who also secured participation in the 1998/99 First Division season . In addition to the Blues , the runner-up FC Clydebank also rose. FC Stenhousemuir and Brechin City had to relegate to the third division . The top scorer with 16 goals was Iain Stewart of Inverness Caledonian Thistle .
