The Scottish Football League Third Division was held under this name for the third time in 1996/97 . It was also the third edition of the Third Division as only fourth highest Scottish league . In the fourth-highest division of men's football in Scotland , 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 matchdays in the 1996/97 season. Each team played four times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .

The championship won Inverness Caledonian Thistle , which together with the table runner-up Forfar Athletic , secured participation in the 1997/98 Second Division season . The top scorer with 27 goals was Iain Stewart of Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
