The Scottish Football League Third Division was held under this name for the 15th time in 2008/09 . It was also the fifteenth edition of the Third Division as only fourth highest Scottish league . In the fourth-highest division of men’s football in Scotland , 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 match days in the 2008/2009 season. Each team played four times against each other. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted before the direct comparison.
The championship was won by FC Dumbarton , who secured promotion and participation in the 2009/10 Second Division season . On the ascent play-offs of taking FC Cowdenbeath , FC East Stirlingshire and FC Stenhousemuir part. In the relegation, Cowdenbeath prevailed against Stenhousemuir. Due to the forced relegation of Livingston FC , from the First Division to the subsequent Third Division , however, both clubs rose. With the expiry of FC Gretna on August 8, 2008, Annan Athletic from the East of Scotland Football League took over the vacated place in the Scottish Football League . The club sat down in the election of the club representatives of the SFL against the clubs; Cove Rangers , Edinburgh City , Preston Athletic and FC Spartans . Mike Jack of Annan Athletic and Brian Graham of East Stirlingshire FC were top scorer with 15 goals .
