The Scottish Football League Third Division was held under this name for the 18th time in 2011/12 . It was also the eighteenth edition of the Third Division as only fourth highest Scottish league . In the fourth-highest division of men’s football in Scotland , 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 matchdays in the 2011/12 season. Each team played four times against each other. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted before the direct comparison.

The championship won Alloa Athletic , which secured the promotion and participation in the 2012/13 Second Division season . On the ascent play-offs of taking FC Queen's Park , FC Stranraer and Elgin City part. In the relegation there was a match between the Albion Rovers and FC Stranraer in the final round , of which the third division from Coatbridge prevailed. Due to the forced relegation of the Glasgow Rangers at the beginning of the 2012/13 season from the Scottish Premier League to the Third Division , the defeated FC Stranraer also rose.
