Goal difference

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The goal difference (also called subtraction method) is a method for calculating ranking list positions in sport. It is used in various sports to determine table ranks when there is a tie. In football the goal difference from the 1960s is (in France , for example, since the season 1964/65 in Germany since 1969/70) generally applied. Before that, the table position in the event of a tie was calculated using the goal quotient .

calculation

To form the goal difference, the goals conceded are subtracted from the goals scored by a team . If two teams have a tie, the difference calculated in this way decides on their placement, with the higher goal difference being decisive. Sometimes a calculation based on the goal difference can differ from the calculation of the goal quotient, which is common in many sports. As an an example:

Team A scored 6 goals and received 2 goals against.
Tor quotient: Goal difference:
Team B scored 12 goals and received 6 goals against.
Tor quotient: Goal difference:

According to the goal quotient, team A (3 against 2) does better, according to the goal difference, team B (4 against 6).

In most leagues and tournaments, if the goal difference is the same, the number of goals scored decides, in others, however, a direct comparison of the teams with the same points is decisive .
