The Scottish Football League Third Division was held under this name for the eighth time in 2001/02 . It was also the eighth edition of the Third Division as only the fourth highest Scottish league . In the fourth-highest division of men's football in Scotland , 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 matchdays in the 2001/02 season. Each team played four times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .

The championship won Brechin City , which together with the table runner-up FC Dumbarton , secured participation in the 2002/03 Second Division season . The top scorer with 19 goals was Iain Stewart of FC Peterhead .
