The Scottish League Two is the fourth highest football league in Scotland and a division of the Scottish Professional Football League. Ten teams play in the league. By the end of the 2012/2013 season, the name of the league was Scottish Football League Second Division .
The teams play against each other four times. There are three points for a win and one point for a draw. In the event of a tie, the goal difference and then the number of goals scored decide on the table position.
Since 2005/06, the rule has been that only the first in the table moves up automatically. The teams in places two to four play with the table penultimate of the Scottish League One in play-offs for promotion or relegation. The bottom of the table in Scottish League One is relegated directly to Scottish League Two .
Until the 2013/14 season there was basically no relegation from this league. Since the 2014/15 season, however, relegation games have been played: The first two of the fifth-rate Highland Football League and the Lowland Football League play against each other, the winner then against the bottom of the Scottish League Two . A relegated or promoted member is thus determined.
history
As early as 1923 to 1926, the Scottish League had a Division Three with 16 clubs throughout, mostly from the south of the country. The champions and runners-up were promoted to the 2nd division; The champions were Arthurlie FC (from Barrhead , 1923/24) and the Nithsdale Wanderers (from Sanquhar , 1924/25). Economically, this 3rd division was not permanently viable, the third season 1925/26 was no longer ended (the front runner was Helensburgh FC at the time of the cancellation ) and the league was dissolved.
In the years after World War II there was again a 3rd division, this time called the "C" division . In addition to first teams, some reserve teams from higher-class clubs played in it, but they had no right of promotion. In the end, the C-Division was divided into two regional groups, but this attempt was also ended in the mid-1950s.
On July 13, 2012, the Scottish Football League decided that the Glasgow Rangers will take part in the game operations of the Third Division from the 2012/13 season. This decision was confirmed by the Scottish Football Association on July 27, 2012. After just a year in the fourth division, the Rangers rose.
