Brechin ( Gaelic : Breichin ) is a village in the Scottish Council Area Angus . It is located about 10 km west of Montrose and 30 km northeast of Dundee on the South Esk River . In 2011 Brechin had 7481 inhabitants.

history

The Gothic cathedral of Brechin dates from the 13th century. An older round tower from the 11th century is integrated into the building; one of only two surviving historic round towers in Scotland. About four kilometers northeast of the city, the Battle of Brechin was fought in 1452 , in the royalist troops of the Gordon clan defeated an army of insurgents under the Lindsay clan . In 1641 Brechin received the status of a Royal Burgh .

The Glencadam distillery in Brechin has been producing whiskey since 1825 . With the former North Port distillery, another distillery was located in the city between 1820 and 1983.

Brechin is connected to the trunk road network via the A90 , which connects Edinburgh with Thurso and affects the city in the north. Furthermore, the A933 (Brechin – Arbroath ) and A935 (Brechin – Montrose) run through Brechin. Between 1895 and 1981 Brechin was connected to the railway network via the Caledonian Railway , but the station was abandoned. Since 1993 a museum railway has been in operation between Brechin and Bridge of Dun on the old Caledonian Railway during the summer months .

Sports

The football club Brechin City FC , founded in 1906, plays in the Scottish Championship , the second Scottish football league , in the 2017/2018 season . Its home stadium is Glebe Park .
