John Gillies (botanist)

John Gillies (* 1792 in Brechin , Forfarshire , Scotland , † November 24, 1834 in Edinburgh ) was a Scottish doctor and plant collector . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Gillies ".

Life

Gillies was a naval doctor; As a 28-year-old he hoped to escape early death from consumption by traveling to South America . He stayed in South America for eight years and collected a variety of plants. After returning to Europe, he used the six years of his life to organize his large collection of plants and to give parts to his friends botanists for further analysis. Today parts of his plant collection can be found scattered in different herbaria.

Honor taxon

The genus Gilliesia Lindl was named in his honor . named from the Amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae).
