The amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae), also called daffodil family , is a family belonging to the order of the asparagus-like (Asparagales) within the monocotyledons . The name of the eponymous genus Amaryllis is derived from the name of a shepherdess from the Eclogae Virgils .

Systematics

The molecular genetic investigations in the last ten years have led to the fact that the family boundaries within the order of the Asparagales have shifted significantly. The family of Amaryllidaceae J.St.-Hil. was expanded with the taxa of the former families Agapanthaceae and leek plants (Alliaceae). The Amaryllidaceae family was first published under the name "Amaryllydeae" in 1805 by Jaume Saint-Hilaire in Exposition des Familles Naturelles , 1, 134. However, another name for the family is possible because according to the priority rule of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature ICBN the name Alliaceae Batsch ex Borkh. it would be preferable, which was already published in 1797 in Botanical Dictionary , 1, 15 and Amaryllidaceae J.St.-Hil. not until 1805, but with family names there is also the possibility of deviating from the rule.

Synonyms for Amaryllidaceae J.St.-Hil. are: Agapanthaceae F.Voigt , Alliaceae Batsch ex Borkh. , Brunsvigiaceae Horan. , Cyrtanthaceae Salisb. , Galanthaceae G.Mey. , Gethyllidaceae Raf. , Haemanthaceae Salisb. , Leucojaceae Batsch ex Borkh. , Oporanthaceae Salisb. , Pancratiaceae Horan. , Strumariaceae Salisb. , Zephyranthaceae Salisb.

For the Amaryllis family see l. today belong to three subfamilies with about 73 genera with about 1600 species :

  • Amaryllidoideae Burnett : It contains 14 tribes with about 59 to 67 genera and about 800 species.
  • Agapanthoideae Endl. : It contains only one genus:
  • Leek plants (Allioideae Herb. ): It contains three tribes with about 13 genera and about 800 species.
