Lindsay is the name of a Scottish clan from Crawford in Lanarkshire whose progenitor was Baldric de Lindesay, an 11th century Anglo-Norman baron.
history
In 1398 the Earldom of Crawford was created, the first earl of which became the chief of the Lindsays. The clan has spawned a number of well-known personalities, including 4th Earl Alexander Lindsay, who wanted to share all of Scotland with the Count of Ross-shire and William Douglas and was defeated in 1452. Or David Lyndsay of the Mount, a 16th century poet.
The clan's motto is Endure fort (“ Endure with strength”).
The respective Earl of Crawford is the head of the Lindsay clan. Since 1975 this has been Robert Alexander Lindsay, 29th Earl of Crawford and 12th Earl of Balcarres .
