history
The Hendersons trace their origins back to the Pictish Prince Big Henry, a descendant of King Nechtan (Eanruig Mor mac Righ Nechtan), who is said to have founded the ancestral home of Lochmaben Castle near Kinlochleven in the north of Glen Coe around 1011 . His male descendants took the name mac Eanruig, ("son Henry"), which later became Anglicized as McHenry, Henryson, Henderson and other forms. Over time, the descendants of other prominent Henrys took on the same name, and eventually these families merged into a single clan. They lived in Callert, on the north bank of Loch Leven, until they were evicted by the Cameron clan in the fifteenth century. In 1511 they settled Fordell in Fifedas which was assigned to them by King James IV . In Caithness there was another group of the Hendersons, the Clan Gunn . Another family arose in Liddesdale and Ewesdale in the Scottish Borders .
In the 17th and 18th centuries
Known for their height and strength, the Hendersons became the personal bodyguards of the chiefs of the MacDonald of Glencoe clan . This in turn means they were among the victims of the Glencoe massacre in 1692. After the massacre, many Hendersons migrated to other areas of the British Isles and the New World.
