Cochrane is the name of a Scottish clan in Renfrewshire , Scotland .
history
Origin of name
Traditionally, the progenitor of the Cochrane family in Scotland was a Scandinavian Viking who settled in what is now Renfrewshire. However, it is considered established that the clan originally took the name of the Barony of Cochrane. The origin of the name itself possibly goes back to two Gaelic words that together make The Roar of the Battle or Battle Cry .
Written records have only existed about the Cochranes since 1262, namely when a certain Waldenus de Coveran was mentioned in an old document regarding land donations to Walter Stewart the Earl of Menteith .
Other historical bearers of the name were William de Coughran 1296 and Robert de Cochrane around 1360.
20th century
The current Chief's father, the 14th Earl, initially served in the Black Watch and during World War II he fought in Africa, Sicily and Greece. After the war he was stationed in Germany until he left the army in 1953. Sir Ralph Cochrane , the youngest son of Thomas Cochrane, 1st Baron Cochrane of Cults, was a British pilot and officer in the Royal Air Force , best known for his role in Operation Chastise .
