Erskine is the name of a Scottish clan in the Lowlands .
history
The name Erskine is derived from the Erskine region (later also city), which is south of the River Clyde and about ten miles west of Glasgow . Most likely this term comes from Latin or Old English and means something like green rising ground ("green elevation").
The first known person to be named Erskine was Henry Erskine, owner of the Barony of Erskine, who lived in the 13th century during the reign of Alexander II . In modern Scottish Gaelic , the name Arascain is written.

The current chief of Clan Erskine has been James Thorne Erskine , 14th Earl of Mar and 16th Earl of Kellie since 1993 .
Castles
- House of Dun and Dun Estate was the home of Clan Erskine from 1375 to 1980, and archaeological excavations show that people have lived here for around 9,000 years.
- Kildrummy Castle was the seat of the Erskine clan until it was abandoned in 1716 after the failed Jacobite revolt .
- Corgarff Castle was acquired by John Erskine, 18th Earl of Mar in 1626 .
- Kellie Castle was bought by Sir Thomas Erskine in 1613 .
- Dryburgh Abbey was donated to the Earl of Mar by King James IV in 1544 .
