James Thorne Erskine, 14th Earl of Mar, 16th Earl of Kellie (born March 10, 1949 ) is a British nobleman , Deputy Lieutenant of Clackmannanshire and a politician of the Liberal Democrats .

Life

His parents are John Francis Hervey Erskine, 13th Earl of Mar and Pansy Constance Thorne. He attended Eton College , served Queen Elizabeth II in 1962 and 1963 as a Page of Honor, and did community service in York in 1967 and 1968. He attended both the Moray House School of Education in Edinburgh and Inverness College . In his professional career he has worked as a social worker in various Scottish parishes and local authorities. At the same time he served in the Royal Auxiliary Air Force , where he held the rank of Pilot Officer in 1979 and the rank of Flying Officer between 1982 and 1986. Between 1989 and 1991 he worked as a construction technician. In 1991 he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Clackmannanshire.

When his father died on December 22, 1993 he inherited his title of nobility as 14th Earl of Mar and 16th Earl of Kellie with the subordinate titles of 16th Viscount Fentoun , 19th Lord Erskine , 16th Lord Erskine of Dirletoun and 16th Lord Dirletoun . The seat in the House of Lords associated with the titles he took from 1994 on the side of the Liberal Democrats. The title of Viscount Fentoun is the oldest still existing Viscount title of the Peerage of Scotland ; hence the Earl is Premier Viscount of Scotland . He is Chief of Name and Arms of the Erskine Clan . In 1999 he was the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Scottish Parliament in the Ochil constituency . Through the House of Lords Act 1999 , he initially lost his seat in the House of Lords. On April 19, 2000 he received the title Baron Erskine of Alloa Tower , of Alloa in the County of Clackmannanshire for life , which enabled him to return.

James Thorne Erskine married Mary Kirk, daughter of Dougal McDougal Kirk, on March 23, 1974. They have no children and live on Hilton Farm, in Clackmannanshire, Scotland.
