University of the Highlands and Islands

The University of the Highlands and Islands emerged on February 2, 2011 from the UHI Millennium Institute (UHI) , an amalgamation of 13 colleges and research institutions in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland .

In April 2001 the Scottish Parliament had given the then UHI university status, and this subsequently offered courses at university level.

Many of the university's 13 faculties and research institutions have longer histories, with the oldest research institution, The Scottish Association for Marine Science , founded in 1884.

  • SAMS ( Scottish Association for Marine Science ) (founded: 1884)
  • Shetland College (founded 1970)
  • West Highland College (founded 2010)

The faculties and research facilities are spread across 50 learning centers in the Highlands , the Isles , Moray and Perthshire .
