Joseph Antoine Autran (born June 20, 1813 in Marseille ; † March 6, 1877 there ) was a French poet and writer .

Life

Autran was the son of a merchant and spent his childhood and youth in Marseille. When Autran had finished his studies, he settled down as a freelance writer. In his poems, he repeatedly addressed his hometown and the sea and the forces of nature.

At the age of 39, Autran became very wealthy through an inheritance in 1852 and relieved him of all financial worries until the end of his life. As the successor to François Ponsard , who died in 1867 , Autran was admitted to the Académie française (Fauteuil 09) as a member in 1868 .

reception

His poetry anthology La mer , which Autran was able to publish in 1835, was published again in 1855 under the title Les poëmes de la mer .

With his tragedy La fille d'Eschyle , Autran was able to achieve great success and was awarded the literary prize of the Académie française in 1848 . He was able to share this award in equal parts with Émile Augier , who had received this award for his play Gabrielle .

Autran's poems are well-filed and have a Hellenic-Classical touch, but have not left deeper traces in the spiritual life of his nation. They were published in 8 volumes (Paris 1878/81).
