Highlands and Islands

In Scotland , Highlands and Islands essentially refers to the Highlands plus the Orkney , Shetland and Hebrides archipelago .

Sometimes this area is defined as the scope of the Crofters' Act of 1886, which included the seven counties of Scotland Argyll , Inverness-shire , Ross and Cromarty , Sutherland , Caithness , Orkney and Shetland.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) uses a more comprehensive definition, which is also used by Eurostat ’s NUTS at level 2. And it is also the name of an electoral region for the Scottish Parliament .
