The University of Huddersfield ( German : University of Huddersfield ) is a British university in Huddersfield, Northern England .

history

The forerunner was the Young Men's Mental Improvement Society founded in 1841 . From this came the Huddersfield Mechanics 'Institution in 1843 , which was converted into the Technical School and Mechanics' Institute in 1884 together with the Female Educational Institute . In 1896 it became the Technical College and in 1958 the College of Technology emerged from it. In 1970 the college merged with Oastler College to form Huddersfield Polytechnic . In 1992 the name was changed to University of Huddersfield .

From 2003 to 2015, the actor Patrick Stewart was the university's chancellor. Andrew, Duke of York was Chancellor from July 2015 to November 2019 , and the position has been vacant since then.
