history

Today's university goes back to the Southampton College of Art, founded in 1855. This became the Southampton Institute of Higher Education in 1984 and finally Southampton Solent University in 2004. Since there is already a university in Southampton called the University of Southampton , the nickname Solent was used, which denotes a branch of the English Channel. The institution was officially granted university status on July 12, 2005, making it currently the youngest university in the UK.
