Origins
On September 11, 1828, a Preston resident Joseph Livesey held a meeting "for the purpose of establishing an institution in Preston". The meeting was held at 7:30 pm in "Mr. Smith's Great Room No. 11, Cannon Street, (above Mr. Templeton's school)". This encounter led to another meeting at the town's Kornmarkt (now the "Assembly" Bar) on Lune Street on October 7th that year. On August 1, 2004, the former Northumbria University in Carlisle was incorporated with around 400 students.
